Colin Montgomerie will lay down his clubs next week to plead golf's case to become an Olympic sport again in time for the 2016 Games.
Europe's 2010 Ryder Cup captain will make a presentation to the International Olympic Committee's executive board in Lausanne on June 15.
Golf is vying with karate, squash, rugby, roller sports, baseball and softball for two spots on the programme from 2016.
"I got involved when I heard that sports like rollerball and softball, even rugby sevens, are pleading for a spot," Britain's Montgomerie told reporters after finishing his Wales Open second round at Celtic Manor on Friday.
"I consider golf much more of an Olympic sport than some of those I've heard are trying to get in.
"I always felt when tennis made it then it was about time golf did."
Montgomerie will suggest involvement by the world's top professionals playing individually rather than in a team format.
The hope is that the thought of Tiger Woods competing at the Olympics for the first time will be irresistible to the IOC.
The IOC will vote on the existing 26 sports on the programme and the inclusion of two more at its session in Copenhagen in October.
Golf was an Olympic sport in 1900 and 1904 but has been off the programme since then.
