Geoff Molson and his brothers Andrew and Justin agreed in principle to purchase the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, returning one of hockey's most storied franchises to the Canadian brewing family.
George Gillett, whose sports holdings also include a part ownership of English Premier League club Liverpool, sold the Original Six franchise for more than $500 million, according to local media reports.
The sale includes the Bell Centre arena and Gillett's successful concert promoting company Gillett Entertainment Group.
"Our family has been very proud to be associated with the Montreal Canadiens over the past eight years and particularly to be a part of their Centennial season," Gillett said in a statement on NHL.com.
"I am fully confident that the Molson brothers, who have been a great part of the heritage of the club, will ensure the preservation and development of this great sports institution."
The Molson family has a long history with the Canadiens having owned the team from 1957-71.
