Chamber of Deputies approves Rio 2016 Olympic Pact
 23/06/2009

Brazil’s Federal Chamber of Deputies approved the Olympic Act, which confirms and reinforces the sixty-four guarantees from the Federal Government related to Rio de Janeiro’s bid to host the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The bill, submitted on 6 February by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, will now be read by the Federal Senate.

The Olympic Act is a further sign of the strength of the Federal Government’s commitment to provide the necessary support and investments to stage the Games if Rio is chosen as Host City by the International Olympic Committee on 2 October. The Bill was approved by parliamentarians from both government and opposition parties.

"Everyone was able to perceive the importance of the project for the city of Rio de Janeiro and for the country,” said Michel Temer, President of the Chamber.

“The Rio 2016 Bid Committee welcomes the Bill and believes it to be a significant initiative for our bid. A key feature of our bid is the total support of all three levels of Governments and the Olympic Act highlights the Federal Government’s commitment to deliver,” said Mr Carlos Nuzman, Rio 2016 President.

The sixty-four guarantees provided by the Federal Government meet the operational and logistical needs of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and confirm that all necessary projects will be implemented. Among the measures is the dispensation of visa requirements for non-Brazilians who are Games-credentialed, the creation of a transport and traffic agency during the Games, central coordination of hotel charges and a guarantee that laws and rules on doping control will be aligned with World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines.

The legacy guarantees of the Bill include transport infrastructure projects, investment in a range of public works, use of sports and non-sports facilities belonging to the federal government, expansion of airport capacity, financial support to revitalize the city’s port area and the provision of credit to finance Olympic Village accommodation.
