World Sport Group (WSG), which holds global media rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL), will start talking with broadcasters for a fresh deal after the collapse of Setanta.
"We are waiting for the liquidation process to be over. We will then initiate talks for selling the IPL rights for the UK territory," WSG South Asia CEO Venu Nair tells Indiantelevision.com.
Cash-strapped Irish sports broadcaster Setanta, which filed for bankruptcy on Tuesday, holds the telecast rights for the IPL in UK.
"We had sold the rights to Setanta till 2012," says Nair, while staying away from commenting on the financial details of the deal.
BSkyB and ESPN are reportedly in pursuit of the IPL rights. The BBC is reluctant to spend heavily on sports content and commercial free-to-air broadcasters are under financial stress.
On Monday, The Walt Disney-owned ESPN bought the rights to the 46 Premier League games Setanta owned for next season as well as the 23 games for the following three years for $408 million.
Apart from IPL, the focus will also be on the rights of sporting events such as the Scottish Premier League, English FA Cup, the Blue Square Conference and golf's US PGA tour that Setanta owned.
