Glasgow-based Barr Construction has won a £58 million contract to build the Basketball Arena for the 2012 Olympics.
Barr will build and own the temporary 12,000 seater venue and rent it to the Olympic Delivery Authority for the Olympics and Paralympics. The contractor will dismantle the venue and remove it from site after the event.
Construction of the arena - the third largest venue to be used during the games – is expected to begin early 2010.
During the games the arena will have 12,000 seats for the basketball preliminaries and quarter-finals, as well as the handball semi-finals and finals.
During the Paralympic Games it will have a capacity of 10,000 seats for wheelchair basketball and wheelchair rugby. It will also house the athletes before they make their way down to the stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies.
