Clive Sherling has been appointed as the first Independent Non-Executive Chair of the Football Foundation.

Created in 2000, the Football Foundation is a partnership between the Premier League, The Football Association and Government, which seeks to address a previous under investment in local grassroots sports facilities, and to harness the power and popularity of football to make a positive impact on individuals and local communities.

The Foundation has been particularly successful at using the funds available to it to more than double the partnership investment. For example, since 2000, the Foundation has awarded grants totalling £360m to support 6,771 projects worth £822m.

Speaking on behalf of the Foundation’s Trustees, Acting Chair Roger Burden said: “Clive’s appointment is wonderful news for the Foundation. His experience in the business community coupled with that of working in the world of football made him the outstanding candidate.

“The fact that he also has a demonstrable record of supporting work in the charitable sector means that he will bring a wide and varied array of relevant skills, knowledge and ideas to the table.”

Clive said of his appointment: “I am delighted to be named as the Football Foundation’s first independent non-executive Chair. I have long been admirer of its work and fully recognise the impact it is having on not just our sporting but also our social landscape.

“I hope to be able to use some of the skills and experience I have gained over many years in the finance and charitable sectors to enhance the work of the Foundation in cooperation with our funders and others.”
