The Barbados Olympic Association (BOA) is throwing its support behind Toronto bidding to host the 2015 Pan American Games.
The Nation News, a Barbados newspaper, quotes BOA president Steve Stoute saying Wednesday during a luncheon where the Canadian High Commission presented Toronto 2015's bid book to the BOA, "the Barbados National Olympic Committee supports the Toronto bid. We will be voting for Toronto.
"Our association with Canada goes right back. Right now there are a number of projects and programs we are working with Commonwealth Games Canada (CGC) and the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) to assist us with Olympic sport here in Barbados".
In his capacity as president of the Caribbean National Olympic Committee (CANOC) Stoute said he would also urge all 26 member countries from the region to support Toronto's bid "as an indication that the Caribbean is appreciative of the support it receives from Canada. CANOC is the primary beneficiary of funding from Commonwealth Games Canada".
A five-minute video presentation was shown outlining the reasons why Toronto's bid should be supported. The video showed Toronto's ethnic diversity, infrastructure and travel connections to the rest of the region. It also showed the strong sporting history of the city which has already staged the FIFA Under-20 World Cup and that the city is the home of the Blue Jays baseball team and the Raptors basketball team.
Lima, Peru and Bogota, Colombia are also bidding for the 2015 Pan Am Games.
