India's supreme court threw out a petition on Thursday that threatened to scupper New Delhi hosting next year's Commonwealth Games.
The athletes' village being built on the banks of the Yamuna, one of India's major rivers flowing through the capital city, was the subject of a legal case after a petition said the new construction would adversely affect the river bed and the flood plain.
The court threw out the petition and the three-man bench said: "The high court should not have entertained the petition at all."
A senior Commonwealth Games Federation said last year that Delhi could lose the right to host the games if organisers are forced to shift the athletes' village from its present location.
"The government has taken all necessary steps and observed the due process of law by issuing necessary notifications," the supreme court ruled.
All but one of the 17 stadiums would be ready by Dec. 31 and the cycling velodrome by March, the government had told national parliament this month after serious concerns had been raised over delays in building venues for the 2010 Oct. 3-14 event.
