The LPGA lost yet another tournament from its 2009 schedule when an October event in China was canceled.
The tournament, which is owned by IMG and set to be held Oct. 23-25, won’t be staged after the agency was unable to find a sponsor to cover the cost of the $1.9 million purse, according to the Sports Business Daily.
The LPGA and IMG announced the move in a joint statement without disclosing a reason for the cancellation.
A new course to replace Hainan West Golf Club also hadn’t been located by the LPGA or IMG, the Sports Business Daily reported. China Air sponsored last year’s inaugural tournament, which had a $1.8 million purse.
The loss leaves the LPGA, golf’s top professional women’s circuit, with just one tournament on its schedule for October. The tour also is searching for a commissioner after Carolyn Bivens was ousted last month.
Earlier this year, the Bell Micro Classic was pushed back to next spring from October. The Kapalua LPGA Classic, also scheduled for October, was canceled in July. The LPGA now has just 14 events on its 2010 schedule after beginning this year with 31 tournaments.
