Glasgow 2014, the Organising Committee for the 20th Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow between 23rd July and 3rd August 2014 today announced the appointment of David Grevemberg as its Director of Operations.
Mr. Grevemberg’s responsibilities will include the development and delivery of an integrated operational planning process, the development of functional strategies, modelling of venue operating plans and the production of venue-specific operating plans for all the Games venues. He will also have responsibility for time and cost management of operations leading up to and during the Games. His role will involve the planning, management and oversight of the Operations Department of Glasgow 2014, which is responsible for the delivery of all services to Athletes and Officials, covering elements such as the sports programme, venue development and overlay, Athletes’ Village development and Games time fit-out, accreditation, medical services, technology, ceremonies and cultural activities, and Games time support services like transport and security.
David Grevemberg is currently the Executive Director, Sport and International Federation (IF) Relations at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), where he also served as Sports Director from 1999 to 2007. His responsibilities at the IPC, amongst others, included the oversight of all activities associated with the development and delivery of the Paralympic Games sports programmes, National Paralympic Committee Services, Village Operations and Technology. He was also responsible for overseeing the governance and management activities of nine sport bodies under the jurisdiction of the IPC as well as acting as the lead liaison with numerous IFs and Major Games Organising Committees.
John Scott, Chief Executive of Glasgow 2014, said on announcing the appointment:

Our ambition is to host an oustanding, athlete-centred Games and David’s long experience in the highest echelons of world sport will help us enourmously in achieving that ambition. I have worked with David before through my involvement in UK Sports’ World Class Events Programme and have the highest regard for his professional capabilities and for him personally, as a colleague. The Commonwealth Games is the only major Games where the Elite Athletes with a Disability (EAD) sports programme is integrated with the main sports programme. David’s experience in this regard will be of particular relevance.”
David Grevemberg said:
“I have had the honor and privilege of working in the international major sports events sector for 14 years. I have gained first hand knowledge and experience in organising events that legitimately change societies and provide both meaningful and memorable once in a lifetime experiences, including the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games. I’m very excited about working and living in Glasgow and joining up with John and the Glasgow 2014 team. I share their great passion and vision to make these Games a uniquely Scottish celebration that will be appreciated worldwide and I can’t wait to get started.”
David will start work at Glasgow 2014 on 20th October, 2009.
