India’s preparations for the AFC Asian Cup 2011 tournament has received a big financial boost, according to reports, from the most unlikely source – rival sport cricket.
Cricket is the number one sport in the country and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is the richest governing body in cricket.
All India Football Federation chief Praful Patel had reportedly approached BCCI for help and he was rewarded with a kitty of US$5.2 million (250 mllion rupees).
AIFF vice-president Subrata Dutta was quoted in the Indian media as saying: “It was a wonderful job done by Mr Patel. He has assured us that there won’t be any dearth of fund for the development of the game in the country.”
India qualified for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup in Qatar by winning the AFC Challenge Cup in 2008.
Their coach, Englishman Bob Houghton, has since devised a preparation plan in which players called up for national duty will focus their attention on the Qatar tournament.
