Singapore celebrated the One Year Countdown Friday to the 1st Summer Youth Olympic Games. Professor S Jayakumar, Senior Minister and Co-ordinating Minister for National Security unveiled the Countdown Clock, set against the historic City Hall.
The event also celebrated the progress that Singapore has made, as well as the readiness to host the first Youth Olympic Games.
More than 5,000 enthusiasts, supporters, volunteers, government agencies, official sponsors and National Sports Association turned up for the celebration at the Padang in Singapore.
Other activities included the YOG Carnival - with sports tryouts and activity booths, the Olympic Day Run, concerts and fireworks.
A special stamp has been issued by SingPost to commemorate the day.
Goh Kee Nguan, Chief Executive Officer of Singapore 2010 said Friday, "today signifies our one-year countdown mark from the YOG and we are excited to see the crowd that turned up for this evening's celebration. We thank everyone who is here tonight, for coming on board with us on the Singapore 2010 journey. Delivering this once in a lifetime international YOG that we can be proud of will require the participation of everyone, especially the people in Singapore. For those who have yet to join us, we hope that you will do so soon. Together we can deliver a meaningful and memorable YOG".
The IOC Coordinating Commission expressed confidence in the progress made in Singapore to date. In the remaining 365 days to the Games, the IOC said it will continue to work closely with the organizing committee to ensure that Singapore delivers an outstanding inaugural Youth Olympic Games.
