Digicel Extends Fiji Rugby Sevens Sponsorship
 18/08/2009

Digicel Fiji, the fastest growing telecommunications operator in the Pacific, officially announced its continued proud sponsorship of Fiji Rugby at the opening event of the company’s new Business lounge and commercial hub, Kadavu House, Suva.

Speaking to guests at the event, Digicel Fiji CEO John Delves revealed that Digicel has confirmed sponsorship of the Digicel Fiji 7’s team in an agreement to last until 2013. “It is with great pleasure that I can confirm Digicel has agreed continued sponsorship of the Digicel Fiji 7’s team for a further four years.

“Since Digicel began its sponsorship of Fiji rugby in 2005, we have been proudly watching the team go from strength to strength. 2009 was no exception with the Digicel Fiji 7’s wins at both the Hong Kong and Edinburgh tournaments.”

Fiji Rugby Union Chairman Viliame Gavoka and FRU acting CEO Keni Dakuidreketi were both present for the announcement. Viliame Gavoka also addressed the crowd saying, “This renewed sponsorship is the largest in the history of the FRU. Since Digicel began its sponsorship three years ago, Fiji Rugby has developed on the international stage but also at grass roots level with the Digicel Cup.”

“This year’s Digicel Cup has been more exciting than ever and Digicel’s support of the tournament is a significant part of that,” continued Gavoka.

Following the announcement John Delves invited the seven’s players present to join the stage where they were met with a rapturous applause, and said

“We remain proud and excited about this sponsorship and look forward to many more triumphs in the coming years”.

Sevens rugby continues to grow on the world stage with the recent announcement that the game is set to rejoin the 2016 Olympic Games, the first time rugby will be played at the event since 1924.

Digicel is also proud sponsor of the inter-regional tournament in Fiji, the Digicel Cup and several national rugby teams across the South Pacific including; Digicel Tonga Ikale Tahi 7s and 15s, Digicel Vanuatu 7’s and 15’s.

In addition, Digicel Pacific recently announced that it has secured a sponsorship agreement as the lead commercial sponsor of the Tour de Timor cycling event. The Tour de Timor is the principal sporting event of the historic 10th Anniversary of the Popular Consultation celebrations to be held this August 2009.

Since its launch in the South Pacific in November 2006, Digicel has become the fastest growing mobile operator in the Pacific, with current operations in Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Fiji.

Digicel is the largest telecommunications company in the Caribbean operating in 31 markets worldwide, as well as a new entrant to Central America.

The company is renowned for competitive rates, unbeatable coverage, and superior customer care, a wide variety of products and services, and state-of-the-art handsets.

Digicel is the proud sponsor of several national rugby teams across the South Pacific including; Fiji Rugby, Digicel Fiji 7’s, Digicel Tonga Ikale Tahi 7s and 15s, Digicel Vanuatu 7’s and 15’s. Digicel is also the proud sponsor of the Vanuatu Cricket team.
