Andrew Solutions bags World Cup wireless contract
 28/08/2009

South African mobile operator Vodacom has selected telecoms vendor Andrew Solutions to provide the wireless infrastructure for half of the stadiums for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

Andrew Solutions will provide its indoor wireless coverage solution, known as ION-M (Intelligent Optical Network), in five of the 10 stadiums to be used for the 2010 World Cup.

Vodacom, South Africa’s biggest mobile operator, said it chose Andrew because of its “extensive history of enabling wireless communications” in challenging environments, including highly attended sporting events, where the sheer number of mobile users presents capacity issues.

Andrew’s ION-M solution, which is based on an optical distributed antenna system, supports current GSM 900/1800 and UMTS frequency bands as well as next generation LTE and WiMAX networks. The system can be also be customised for different stadiums to overcome signal interference.

Andrew, which will deploy the systems through its South African affiliate Systems Designs Ltd, expects to complete the work before the start of the World Cup on June 11, 2010.

Andrew has previously supported wireless communications at major sporting events including the 2008 European Football Championship in Switzerland, the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, the 2006 World Cup in Germany, and the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy.

Andrew Solutions is a division of US-based wireless communications specialist CommScope Inc.
