Nikon Australia has thrown its backing behind the Gold Coast SuperGP and was announced as the event's naming rights sponsor for the October 22-25 event.
The global photographics company has remained loyal to the Gold Coast event following its involvement with last year's Nikon Indy300.
Organisers had been on the hunt for a new sponsor after Nitro, the Gold Coast energy drink company that beat out big names to sponsor the inaugural SuperGP, was dumped last month after allegedly failing to meet its sponsorship payments.
SuperGP general manager Greg Hooten yesterday admitted a sense of relief to have secured a new naming rights sponsor, less than 50 days out from the event.
"It has involved some hectic negotiations," he said.
"Since the demise of Nitro we have been working very hard to secure a new sponsor and it's great to have Nikon onboard."
"We weren't going to rush the process and have a sponsor just for the sake of having one.
"To be able to secure Nikon with only 50 days to go is a great success and a tribute to the team."
Nikon Australia general manager of sales and marketing, James Murray, said he was delighted the company could continue its association with the Gold Coast's premier race event.
"We had a fabulous year last year and were thrilled at the opportunity to be involved again," said Mr Murray.
"Last year's event was one of the biggest held in the country for a camera company. We were blown away with how big it was and we wanted to be involved again.''
"Our experience with the event in 2008 was fantastic and we really wanted to be a part of it again, however early in the year the Global Economic Crisis saw us have to reassess our commitment and we were unfortunately unable to look at a full-scale sponsorship agreement, which wasnt fair to the event."
"However, in light of the situation now and with a more optimistic climate ahead of us, we have been able to rejoin with the event for 2009 which I know is something everyone at Nikon is very pleased about."
The Nikon SuperGP will bring four days of motorsport entertainment to the streets of Surfers Paradise including the stars of A1GP and the V8 Supercar Championship Series, as well as plenty of on and off track entertainment, Australian Defence Force displays, the TW Steel Miss SuperGP competition and racing from support categories.
Motor Sport is always a major occasion for photography, and with the Nikon SuperGP entering a new era this year I am sure an even more sensational spectacle than ever before is guaranteed, said James Murray, General Manager of Sales and Marketing, Nikon Australia.
The 2009 Nikon SuperGP will host Event 11 of the V8 Supercars Championship Series and the first round of the 2009/10 A1GP World Cup of Motorsport.
The SuperGP replaces the event formerly known as Indy.
