CBS’s television ratings for the U.S. Open’s second straight Monday men’s final increased 41 percent as Juan Martin del Potro upset five-time champion Roger Federer in five sets.
Del Potro’s comeback win at the National Tennis Center in New York, which aired on CBS from 4 p.m. to 8:41 p.m. local time, was seen in an average of 2.4 percent of U.S. homes, compared with 1.7 percent when Federer knocked off Andy Murray in 2008, CBS spokesman Jerry Caraccioli said in an e-mail.
Federer’s win over Great Britain’s Murray began at 5 p.m. and ended shortly after 7 p.m., with the Swiss winning in straight sets.
Argentina’s del Potro snapped Federer’s 40-match U.S. Open win streak yesterday to claim his first major title, winning 3- 6, 7-6 (7-5), 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
Last year, Tropical Storm Hanna extended the tennis season’s final Grand Slam event to a third week for the first time since 1987. Rain in the New York area last weekend led to this year’s Monday finish.
