Munich has taken an environmental approach in its bid for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games, stressing a "green legacy" once the Games are over.
There would be 18 projects undertaken on the environmental protection of the climate and the natural environment.
Dr. Michael Vesper, Supervisory Board Chairman of Munich 2018 and Director General of the German Olympic Sports Federation said, with the compact two-cluster approach, Munich 2018 wants to set new standards for the organization of major events.
Boris Schwartz, project manager Munich 2018 said, "the environmental approach will ensure that, together with Munich, Garmish-Partenkirchen and Schonau am Konigssee" have achieved the highest level in terms of ecology and sustainability. But he added all stakeholders must also be involved.
Dr. Ralf Roth of the German Sports University in Cologne said, "climate neutral Games require a plan calling for the protection of the climate and nature-friendly Games intended to conserve nature and landscape. Both are the basis for sustainable sport and tourism development in the region".
