The SABC's digital migration programme is on track. Acting Head of SABC News and Current Affairs Phil Molefe says the broadcaster has already started rolling out Digital Terrestrial Television programming.
Digital migration took centre stage at the 17th AGM of the Southern African Broadcasting Association in Lesotho today. Fifteen Southern African Development Community countries, including South Africa, form part of the body. South Africa is spending more than R2.5 billion on digital migration, which sees the move from analogue to digital broadcasting. As the official broadcaster of the 2010 Soccer World Cup, the SABC says it’s on track to launch next April.
The International Telecommunications Union has determined that all European, African and Middle Eastern countries have to move to digital broadcasting by 2015. In South Africa, the public broadcaster is one of the key players in the digital terrestrial television, or DTT, drive. Some of the other burning issues that are up for discussion at the SABA conference are HIV/Aids in the region and the role the media plays in reporting on it.
