Twenty20 cricket matches could be staged at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford, east London, as part of the sporting legacy plan for 2012.
The Olympic Park Legacy Company has confirmed that preliminary talks have taken place with two unnamed professional clubs as well as the England and Wales Cricket Board about the possibility of holding matches at the stadium.
Cricket is one of a number of options being explored to maximise the venue’s sporting use after 2012, though its core function will remain an athletics stadium — a key promise of the original London bid. Holding games under floodlights could be popular in a part of London starved of top-flight cricket.
Officials are also looking at offering areas for recreational cricket and net practice within the Olympic Park.
The OPLC, which has taken over responsibility for the park’s legacy from the London Development Agency, is expected to finalise its post-2012 plans by the end of the year.
