Southern hemisphere rugby officials said they expect a decision on the location of the new Super 15 team “within two weeks” after appointing an independent panel to rule on the matter.
South Africa, New Zealand and Australia Rugby, or SANZAR, today picked former New Zealand World Cup-winning captain David Kirk and retired judge Barry Paterson to make a “binding decision” after its executive committee failed to reach a a consensus in Brisbane last week.
Kirk and Paterson will decide whether to add South Africa’s Southern Kings or Melbourne to the southern hemisphere’s elite provincial rugby competition in 2011. The new team will join the Australian Conference.
Melbourne lost out to the Perth-based Western Force when the competition last expanded in 2006. The Kings, who would be based out of Port Elizabeth, are seeking to become South Africa’s sixth team. New Zealand currently has five and Australia four.
