BCCI opens global sponsorship rights tender
 03/11/2009

On Monday, the BCCI has opened a global tender for the rights to be the team sponsor for the Men in Blue, women's Indian team, the under 19 Team India and the Team India A team. The bid document is available at the BCCI office for the sum of Rs 500,000 which is non refundable and non adjustable.

BCCI sources revealed that despite the slowdown, it reckons that the team sponsorship for the four Indian teams could be monetised at upwards of $ 100 million.

Sahara India Pariwar through two different entities has been the Team India sponsor for many years now. Originally it became sponsor with a bid for $ 52 million through Sahara India pariwar and then four years back when bids were thrown open again at the culmination of the previous cycle, it upped it to $ 70 million for another four years.

This time it bid as Air Sahara, an airline which does not exist anymore after its acquisition by Jet Airways. The present cycle gets over on 31 December, 2009. Sahara fought off Idea Cellular, Reliance Mobile and Indian Oil Corporation last time to win the bid. The present cycle included a minimum of 44 Test matches and 110 one day matches over 4 years.

All India matches for and away will feature the new sponsor's logo, considered the most sought after in Indian cricket presently. Last time Hero Honda was also in the race, but it backed out at the last minute. While it is believed that the first right of refusal will be given to Sahara India once again, it is still unclear whether the Lucknow headquartered company will make a fist of it again.

Recently the four year domestic international cricket telecast rights were awarded to Nimbus after they were given the first right of refusal as the incumbent rights owner. Here again the rider was that a handsome guarantee amount was to be paid up by 15 January, 2010.

All bidders have to submit their bids by 5.00 pm on November 24. The eligibility criteria and other requirements as always are extremely stringent. The bid documents also come with a typical BCCI rider - that the cricket board reserves the right at its discretion to cancel or amend the entire bidding process at any stage and to reject any and all bids without providing any reason. BCCI sources also said that merely buying the bid document does not entitle any one to bid.
