V8 Supercars boss Tony Cochrane has called on IMG to do more to recover the $1.8m (Aus) paid to troubled A1GP before it cancelled the opening round of its series in Australia in October.
The State Government paid about $1.8m out of a total $11m contribution for the Gold Coast Super GP, which included V8 and A1 races, to the Gold Coast Motor Events Company (GCMEC). The money then went to event managers IMG and then to A1GP.
A1GP chairman Tony Teixeira had insisted the money, plus a $50,000 donation to a Gold Coast charity, would be paid back in full after A1’s withdrawal for financial reasons.
But Cochrane is quoted on Australian website Goldcoast.com.au as saying: “What exactly is IMG doing to collect the $1.8m? They [IMG] have a huge office in London so it should be a piece of cake to doorknock Tony Teixeira.
“They kept telling us they were in daily contact with A1GP before the Gold Coast event. I really want to know when that money will be returned but I think IMG don’t want to talk about it.”
The website reports that IMG spokesman and SuperGP general manager Greg Hooton said that the $1.8m had not been returned and “the whole situation with A1GP” not attending the race was with lawyers.
A spokesman for GCMEC added that it had also placed the matter in the hands of its lawyers.
The China and Malaysia rounds of A1GP have since been cancelled, leaving the future of the series in doubt.
