The list of sporting events that must be broadcast on free-to-air channels is set to be shortened but could be changed to include the Ashes cricket and international football qualifying matches, according to reports.
A review of the listed events – or ‘crown jewels’ – is being led by former FA executive director David Davies and speculation is growing that he will recommend a wide-ranging shake-up of the list.
The Epsom Derby and the Rugby League Challenge Cup Final could be dropped, while the whole of Wimbledon – rather than just the finals – and rugby union internationals in Wales may be added.
Any change to the Ashes rights would affect the England & Wales Cricket Board’s £300m deal with Sky – and the so called B-list for sports highlights could be axed altogether.
The panel will present its findings to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and they are likely to be published in the next week. Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe and Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw will then make the final decision on any changes.
