Toronto has beaten Bogota and Lima to win the right to host the 2015 Pan American Games.
Canada has hosted the Pan American Games twice before – in 1967 and 1999 –and is preparing to stage the Winter Olympics in Vancouver next year, though Toronto has twice failed to land the Summer Games.
Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty said: “We were honoured to be in this competition with Lima and Bogota and we will do everything we can to reach out to the people from those communities in particular, so that they feel they have a special stake in the 2015 Games.”
Last week, the Pan American Sports Organisation voted for the introduction of six new sports at the 2011 Games, which will take place in Mexico. The new sports are 10-pin bowling, karate, water skiing, squash, roller skating and Basque pelota.
Rio de Janeiro hosted the 2007 Pan American Games and used the event as a springboard for its successful bid for the 2016 Olympics.
