Mobile boom expected around 2010 World Cup
 09/11/2009

The 2010 World Cup in South Africa will be a showcase for mobile content and applications, industry experts believe.

With at least two major telecoms companies among the sponsors, services such as mobile TV, user-generated content and advergaming will prove popular during the tournament, according to Ayodale Cole, founder and chief executive of American mobile content and applications provider Cole Solutions.

Fifa reported more than 73 million page views on its mobile web portal during the 2006 World Cup in Germany and mobile operator 3 had 740,000 users a week watching its World Cup clips.

Cole said: “At the time the German World Cup took place, mobile content and applications was only a fledgling market. Since then, the industry has matured and consumers have higher expectations from mobile content providers. To compete, content providers will need to offer rich, high-quality content to subscribers.”

With about 40 million mobile subscribers in South Africa and only about five million internet users, there will be huge demand for World Cup information and content, Cole added.
