Formula 1 world champions Brawn GP say they are looking at “all opportunities” regarding the future ownership of the team and have refused to rule out the possibility that engine partner Mercedes could buy a majority stake.

Speculation is mounting that the German car giant is ready to take a 75% stake in the team, which was rescued from the ashes of Honda at the start of this year.

The team won the constructors title in its first season and Brawn driver Jenson Button was crowned world champion, but team principal Ross Brawn remained tight-lipped when asked about Mercedes’ future involvement.

He said: “Mercedes is a very important partner – without their engine I don’t think we would have won the championship this year. It’s a great engine – possibly best in Formula 1 – and we’ve formed a great partnership with Mercedes. We’re looking at all opportunities when it comes to the future but it’s too early to say what they’ll be at the moment.”

Brawn did admit, however, that Virgin is unlikely to remain a sponsor next season. “We had a great year with Virgin but they have different ambitions next year so it’s unlikely you’ll see Virgin name on the car again. They had the faith or good luck to be involved at the beginning and it’s worked very well.”
