Helsinki has been awarded the European Athletics Championships for a third time.
The Finnish capital, which also hosted the event in 1971 and 1994, was the unanimous choice of the European Athletics Council to stage the championships in 2012.
Finland Athletics Federation president Antti Pihlakoski said: “This is a fantastic day for the city of Helsinki, the Finnish Athletics Federation and the country of Finland and I am very pleased that we are able to host this prestigious championship for a third time.”
The 2012 event will take place between June 27 and July 1 as the European Championships switches to a two-year cycle. But the marathon and walking events will be dropped because of the close proximity to the London Olympics.
With the London Games due to start on July 27, leading athletes may opt not to compete in Helsinki.
A full championship programme will be held in non-Olympic years.
