Former Renault Formula One boss Flavio Briatore will demand at least Euros1m compensation for damage to his reputation after he was banned from the sport for life following the Nelson Picquet Jr crash scandal, according to media reports.
The Guardian claims that Briatore will allege that the World Motor Sport Council, chaired by Max Mosley, was “clearly blinded by an excessive desire for personal revenge” when he appeals against his ban in Paris later this month.
The paper says it has seen documents which reveal that Briatore is asking for a total annulment of the FIA’s instruction to its members not to have any dealings with him. The case will be heard by France’s high court on November 24.
The Guardian also reports that Renault’s former executive director of engineering Pat Symonds will join Briatore’s appeal in a bid to get his own five-year ban overturned.
Briatore and Symonds were accused by their former driver, Nelson Piquet Jr, of telling him to crash during the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix to secure a victory for the team’s No1 driver Fernando Alonso.
It is understood that the pair will claim that the World Council broke basic rules of procedure which prevented them getting a fair trial.
Briatore and Mosley clashed last season over the proposed budget cap on Formula One teams, with Mosley calling the 58-year-old Italian and other members of the Formula One Teams Association “loonies”.
The outcome of Briatore’s appeal is likely to determine whether he can continue in his role as the chairman and majority shareholder of Queens Park Rangers. The Football League has said that it will wait for the result of the action before discussing the question of whether he has breached their fit-and-proper-persons rule.
