Internet search giant Google has been ordered to pay Rubens Barrichello $500,000 after it was found guilty of hosting fake online profiles of the Formula One driver on a social networking site.
A district court in Sao Paulo reportedly heard the case earlier this week following a complaint made by the 37-year-old Brazilian three years ago.
It heard that more than 300 fake profiles were posted on Google-owned Orkut – a popular social networking site in Barrichello’s homeland – and that Google was ultimately at fault for not putting a stop to it as the site’s manager and rule-maker.
The figure of $500,000 is already the biggest ever award in Brazil for online libel but the former Brawn GP driver, who has joined Williams for next season, could yet get as much as $700,000 as the compliant was lodged three years ago.
